Storm-affected initiation for Health Safety Representative Yahan

An observant Yahan Cai admits her first worksite inspection at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital -  completed as part of her Health Safety Representative (HSR) Training Level 1 - was an eventful one.

“Nothing was working immediately after that big storm which hit the state so it was probably a good day for a worksite inspection,” Yahan said.

“There are lot of things you need to check. Before this course I didn’t know how to do one but after this I know to look at things with more detail.”

Yahan, and her HSR colleagues, are now completing action plans as part of their training.

Their plans will reference the appropriate Work, Health and Safety regulations and make suggestions on how to address any safety issues.

Yahan said QEH management had been supportive of her appointment and training with the ANMF (SA Branch).

“Before this course I didn’t really know what Work Health and Safety entailed, and that’s the same for some of my colleagues,” she said.

“Now I view things with a new set of eyes.”

ANMF (SA Branch) CEO/Secretary Adj Associate Professor Elizabeth Dabars AM addressed the HSRs during one of their final training sessions at our Ridleyton office last week.

“The role of HSR is a crucial one. Clearly, you are seen as people who can be trusted with this responsibility; so well done and a big thank you to you all,” she said.

“HSRs provide important accountability and can use their power not only to correct unsafe workplaces but act proactively to create safe workplaces.

“I do think it is wonderful to be in a room with other people who know and share your experiences within the health system. These collective experiences will be beneficial as you return to your own workplace.”

The ANMF (SA Branch) is working with the State Government to implement the 10-point plan and end violence and aggression towards our members.
