Sonja signs up to fix aged care

23 March 2022

Family therapist Sonja Baram worked on the frontline of the pandemic as a first-response counsellor for the SA COVID Mental Health Support Line.

As the Labor candidate for the federal seat of Sturt, Ms Baram says, to quote her website, her key priorities are to “protect and strengthen our health and education systems to ensure a better future for our whole community.

“Protecting Medicare, supporting high quality and timely delivery of health services right across our health system, and ensuring that no South Australian must wait for, or go without, necessary healthcare services – these are urgent priorities for me.’’

Such urgent priorities include the need to ‘Fix Aged Care’, with Ms Baram signing the ANMF’s Aged Care pledge at our Ridleyton headquarters this week.

“We warmly welcome yet another commitment to our aged care cause,’’ ANMF (SA Branch) CEO/Secretary Adj Associate Professor Elizabeth Dabars AM said of Ms Baram.

“Labor, the Greens and some key independents have all signed up to our campaign to overhaul a tragically understaffed and under-resourced aged care sector.  Sadly, and unbelievably, not one Liberal Party member has committed to sign the pledge.’’

The ANMF campaign is asking for support for four key actions:

1. RN 24/7 – at least one registered nurse on site at all times
2. Minimum mandated care hours and the right skills mix
3. Greater transparency – funding tied to care
4. Improved wages and conditions
