National Palliative Care Week raising awareness and busting myths

20 May 2022

Celebrating the commitment and dedication of nurses and volunteers will be a key component of National Palliative Care Week (May 22-28).

The event is also about raising awareness about the rights of all Australians to access high-quality palliative care when they need it and dispelling the myth that it is only for end-of-life care.

In the lead up to the week, there will be a virtual conference today (Friday, May 20) – Palliative Care for All: 2022 and Beyond.

There will be a range of experts covering the below themes and topics:

Palliative Care is available for all ages:

From Paediatric palliative care to Aged Care.

Ensuring Equity of Access:

Access for all to Palliative Care including regional South Australians, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, Aboriginal people, the homeless, prisoners, people with complex needs and disabilities.

Culturally Appropriate:

Listening to how different communities view death and dying and how they want to plan for their future.

Clinical Care leading to quality of life:

The primary goal is to optimise the quality of life, with a care plan co-designed between the person, their family, specialist palliative care service and the broader palliative care sector.

Nurses, community members, academics and policy makers are among those who’ll be attending the conference, with Palliative Care South Australia hoping it trigger more discussion and planning towards greater accessibility for all South Australians.
