Having a drip applied to the arm or receiving a daily dose of medicine are not exactly pleasurable experiences but these aspects of a hospital visit can make all the difference in a patient’s recovery.
Starting on Monday, a group of Enrolled Nurses will undertake ANMEC’s Administer and Monitor Medicines and Intravenous Therapy unit – a 12-week journey which will allow them to have a greater involvement in a patient’s stay.
Many of the ENs involved in the course will secure a significant discount off the cost as a benefit of their ANMF (SA Branch) membership.
Course manager Helen Loffler said participants often have an interest in “increasing their scope of practice” while others will be using the course as a “refresher” to meet an employee’s requirements.
“Enrolled Nurses often want to be more engaged with their patients and invest more time in patient wellbeing and completing this program is a way of achieving that,” Ms Loffler said.
“It will enable them to administer intravenous therapy in conjunction with a Registered Nurse.”
Ms Loffler said the unit – which has a number of intakes over a year - has proven popular in the past.
“Our nurse educator often receives really good reviews because she is responsive to the needs of the participants and offers one-on-one support,” she said.
“No question is foolish; the educator has a non-judgemental approach to learning and you can ask those questions you might be reluctant to bring up in the work environment.”
ANMF (SA Branch) CEO/Secretary Adj Associate Professor Elizabeth Dabars AM said the course is another example of ANMEC providing opportunities for our members to grow within their profession.
“We know how passionate nurses are about their work and this is an opportunity to contribute more to the team effort required to care for patients,” Ms Dabars said.
“I am confident participants will embrace the opportunity to increase their skillset, become more involved in a patient's stay and overall care and ultimately become more employable.”
