Urgent action sought on fatigue

14 May 2021

Almost a year to the day since SA Health chief executive Chris McGowan wrote to the ANMF (SA Branch) to confirm its “commitment to the early and full implementation’’ of anti-violence and fatigue policies, very little has been done.

Today ANMF (SA Branch) CEO/Secretary Adj Associate Professor Elizabeth Dabars AM wrote to Dr McGowan reminding him of SA Health’s duty of care as an employer, and related obligations under the Work Health and Safety Act (SA) 2012 (the Act) to provide employees and visitors alike with a safe environment.

The ANMF has been receiving escalating reports by nursing and midwifery staff of excessive use of extra shifts, double shifts, overtime, and related missed/delayed care.

We have urged Dr McGowan to act on these issues and we have also offered solutions in correspondence sent today.

We have requested that Dr McGowan provide an action plan to rectify the staffing shortages, both in the short term and ongoing basis including timeframes for implementation by COB 28 May 2021.
