ANMF calls on the CEO of SA Health to act

19 May 2021

The ANMF (SA Branch) has written to SA Health chief executive Dr Chris McGowan outlining his Duty of Care to patients and staff alike and our associated concerns over excessive use of extra shifts, double shifts, overtime and related missed/delayed care, and urged him to act.

We have put forward short, medium and long-term solutions including immediate cessation of voluntary separation packages, converting repeat fixed term and casual contracts to permanent employment and many other measures.

We also remind all members of the Nurses and Midwives Fatigue and Organisational Climate Survey.

Thank you if you have already completed it. Please encourage your colleagues to do the same. The more members who complete it, the stronger our message.

With unprecedented demand for hospital beds and chronic overcapacity across the state impacting adversely on staff and patients alike, the results of the survey will be used to illustrate to LHNs the urgent need to put in place the SA Health Fatigue Management Framework, and also provide an avenue for action through WHS.

The 10-minute survey, which will run until the end of May, will help highlight the current issues relating to fatigue and how best to address them, for the mental, emotional and physical wellbeing of nurses and midwives and those in their care.

Thank you for your ongoing dedication and care in all that you do. You are making a difference.

Member participation will be confidential.
