Happy Mother's Day

10 May 2020

Sadly, but very importantly, there will no hugs or kisses for mum this Mother’s Day.

However, South Australians will be free to visit their mums on Sunday following just a single COVID-19 case in 15 days. Gatherings are limited to 10 people and social distancing rules still apply. People exhibiting any coronavirus-like symptoms, however slight, are urged not to visit mum.

Over in Victoria, stricter restrictions will mean mums will have to settle for a phone call or video chat.

There are over 378,000 nurses and midwives in Australia, about 90 per cent of them women … so it’s a fair bet to say we have a lot of mums and grandmothers among our ranks.

This week, we also fittingly celebrated the Day of the Midwife to recognise professionals who support expectant mothers on the journey of welcoming a new addition into their lives.

“To the mums of Australia, we say thank you for your selfless devotion to successive generations,’’ ANMF (SA Branch) CEO/Secretary Adj. Associate Professor Elizabeth Dabars AM said.

“Mothers are widely considered to be the most important and influential figure in the shaping of a person’s life and this realisation, I think, has helped to empower the cause of gender equality … as men too reflect on how crucial mothers are and have been in their lives.

“While there will not be any hugs this weekend, we hope the goodwill, appreciation and love flows through, be it from a phone or video call or 1.5m away.’’
